ORLANDO, FL – Kayleigh Bush, Miss North Florida 2025, has been threatened with a lawsuit by the Miss America pageant after she was interviewed by TMZ as she exited a “She Leads America” event in Washington, DC. About four weeks after Kayleigh was crowned Miss North Florida 2025, the Miss America Organization presented her with a new contract that said a “female” can be a “male” who has fully underwent “sex-reassignment surgery” before age 14. When she refused to sign this new definition of “female,” she lost the benefits of her crown and was not permitted to participate in the next round of the pageant. Now, the Miss America Organization has threatened to sue Bush for her public stand for truth.
In a recent interview on Capitol Hill with TMZ, Bush said, “It was disappointing because Miss America has been honoring women for over 100 years, and now they can’t even define what a woman is.”

| After Bush won the Miss North Florida pageant in 2024, she was presented with a new contract from the Miss America Organization that defined “female” as a “male” who has “Sex Reassignment Surgery via a Vaginoplasty (from male to female).” When she refused to lie and go against her religious convictions, she lost the benefits of her title and the ability to compete in the Miss Florida pageant. The new contract language states: 2.3.5.1. Sex. The Applicant must be a Female. “Female” means a born female or an individual who has fully completed Sex Reassignment Surgery via Vaginoplasty (from male to female) with supporting medical documentation and records. Supporting medical documentation must be in the form of the certification attached, signed by the surgeon who performed the surgery and notarized, along with a copy of board certification and a current medical license. No alternative gender affirming surgery will suffice as acceptable in place of a Vaginoplasty. (emphasis added) On April 24, 2025, Liberty Counsel sent a demand letter to the Miss Florida Scholarship Program, Inc., and the Miss America Organization after they refused and denied her appeals to reconsider the contract language and restore her title so that she could compete in the Miss Florida competition scheduled for June 25-28, 2025. Bush was crowned Miss North Florida in September 2024 and was denied the benefits of the title in November after objecting to the false definition as contrary to her religious beliefs and Florida law. Bush was honored by the She Leads America organization with the 2025 Young Christian Woman of Distinction award on October 10, 2025. She Leads America also crowned her as “Miss She Leads America,” and her award was entered into the Congressional Record for her courage to stand for her convictions. Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver said, “Kayleigh Bush chose courage over the crown and refused to accept the lie that boys can become girls. In doing so, she lost the ability to compete in Miss Florida and was not able to fully enjoy the benefits of her title. In light of the recent $2 million verdict against a counselor and a plastic surgeon who performed these unthinking surgeries, this harmful gender ideology must end. This has no place anywhere, especially in women’s sports or pageants.” For more information about Kayleigh Bush’s story, visit LC.org/crown. |
