Via Trump Train News:
In the light of the killing of George Floyd, Democrats have been pushing to “Defund the Police”.
Their intent behind those words varies depending on which Democrat you talk to, but they may be talking out of both sides of their mouths.
In the House, Democrats Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) are the biggest recipients of PAC money from police unions and law enforcement groups, according to Open Secrets.
For context, Steny Hoyer serves as the House Majority Leader. In that role, Hoyer is responsible for setting the schedule on which legislation sees the light of day and when it does. This places him in a precarious position as his party seeks to strip funding from law enforcement.
The two biggest recipients in the United States Senate of Political Action Committee money from police unions and law enforcement groups are Democratic Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT).
Klobuchar has been under fire for her conduct during her tenure as a local prosecutor in Minnesota:
Klobuchar did not bring charges in more than two dozen cases of officer-involved fatalities during her prosecutorial tenure. Klobuchar, along with fellow Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) is now calling for an investigation by the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division into the “patterns and practices of racially discriminatory and violent policing in the Minneapolis Police Department” in a letter to Attorney General William Barr.
In 2016, the FBI estimated that sworn officers represent 2.4 per 1,000 Americans. A 2016 Pew study showed that police views on law enforcement’s treatment of Black communities differ sharply from the general public’s.
As we pointed out yesterday:
[M]embers of Congress work out of a congressional office building which is highly secured and guarded by the Capitol Police. The entire United States Capitol Police budget is $460 million annually.
