WASHINGTON, D.C. (NRB) — The National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) celebrates today’s Supreme Court ruling as a major victory for the right of states to protect children from irreversible gender transition procedures.
The following statement is attributable to NRB General Counsel Mike Farris, who co-authored an amicus brief in the case submitted by Citizens for Self Governance.
“Today, the Supreme Court delivered an important victory for the ability of states to protect children from unproven medical procedures that advance wokeness rather than good health care.
“Like more than twenty other states, Tennessee’s legislature passed a law which prohibited puberty blockers, surgery, and other aggressive procedures that are often irreversible. Children who are subjected to such treatments can be left with permanent sterility and other life-altering complications. Many studies conclude that the vast majority of children who experience gender dysphoria return to a normal orientation if their bodies are allowed to progress normally without such procedures.
“The Court held that Tennessee did not violate the Equal Protection Clause by prohibiting such procedures for minors.
“This case falls within a narrow exception to the principle that parents alone should be able to make medical decisions for their children. While parents generally have broad discretion to make medical decisions for their children, no parent has the right to make a decision that could permanently harm the child in a significant manner to obtain an uncertain result.
“If the science was uniform in its view of the safety and efficacy of these treatments, this case would have been much harder. But there is a mounting body of evidence that demonstrates that the harms far outweigh the benefits of such treatments.
“The power to make public policy on safe medical treatments lies squarely with the states and not federal judges. The Supreme Court demonstrated the important principle of judicial self-restraint by refusing to second guess the valid policy choices of the Tennessee legislature in this important field.”
NRB has long affirmed the biblical and traditional view of gender and continues to stand opposed to any and all disordered attempts to reduce the true reality of the male and female sexes to a relativistic spectrum.
